The idea

The best alternative to WhatsApp is not the next large provider. It is a network nobody owns.

Matrix works like email: many servers, one protocol, all of them talking to each other. This is one of them — not the centre, just a node. If you do not like it, pick another. Or run your own.

Your address

No phone number. No address book upload. Other people only need your address — and it looks like an email address that has been stirred once:

@anna:knoten.chat
@at the front, not in the middle
annathe name you choose
:instead of a second @
…chatyour server

The one thing that trips people up

Every app asks for the server during setup. Not for the page you are looking at. The name is at the top of this page — and it is also in your own address, after the colon.

If an app insists on a full URL:
https://matrix.knoten.chat

Staying honest

Private conversations are encrypted — including from the operator. Which also means: lose your recovery key and older messages are gone. Nobody can bring them back. That is the price of nobody reading along.
